At root, his book can be seen as a superb exercise in problem-solving: one that actually established "e magic"e as a historical problem worthy of investigation. By publishing Religion and the Decline of Magic, Thomas became the first serious scholar to attempt to synthesize the full range of popular thought about the occult and the supernatural, studying its influence across Europe over several centuries. Keith Thomas's classic study of all forms of popular belief has been influential for so long now that it is difficult to remember how revolutionary it seemed when it first appeared. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With the help of Bradley Voytek, a neuroscientist at the University of California and an advisory board member of the Zombie Research Society, we’ve taken stock of the zombie film conventions that Bodies throws out the window, the ones it keeps, and how much sense any of it makes - from a pseudo-scientific perspective. Yes, it’s a wrong-side-of-the-tracks (or in this case, massive zombie wall) romance set in a post-apocalyptic city, but it’s also an exercise in forgetting most of the other major tropes of zombie movies. Romeo and The Walking Dead, this all seems very uncanny, maybe even sacrilegious. But Bodies, which is based on the novel by Isaac Marion and hits theaters tomorrow, doesn’t feel like a bullet in the head of the zombie genre at all, but rather a refreshing new take.
